Subject:Empress Dowager Cixi Scroll 230.216
Posted By: Chelsea Thu, May 21, 2026 IP: 76.238.198.207

Hello,

I am hoping to determine the artist of this Chinese scroll. I know that two of the seals are Empress Dowager seals, but am hoping that the other two lead to the painter. The Google translation of the calligraphy cites Li Baoxun (1859–1915) and dates it as 1904- but perhaps he is just the calligrapher as I don't see any paintings under his name. As always, any help is greatly appreciated!

Not sure where the 1904 date appears in the Li Baoxun colophon, but he does say it was written in the sixth month (probably July by the lunar calendar) at West Lake, which is in Hangzhou. Here I think his inscription is intended to convey an association with authenticity, as a number of his writings catalog paintings that he viewed. More likely, the 1904 date appears in the inscription at upper right, which I can't read from the photo. Again though this picture shows the type of deliberate distressing of the picture surface that became common from around the early 1990s, so it likely dates from since that time.
