阿堂類 友引 ataru tomobiki**
Getting sick by eating saucer scallop - on a friend pulling day
* Verbatim:Sun and Moon Shell
• This bivalve is considered an auspicious creature; it gets its name from the fact that one side of its shell is a vivid red (representing the sun), while the other side is pale yellow to white (representing the moon).
** Tomobiki - a friend pulling day
It refers to the Rokuyo (六曜) which is a traditional Japanese six-day calendar system used to determine auspicious and inauspicious days. It is often consulted when scheduling major life events like weddings, funerals, moving, or starting a business etc.
The inscription draws on the wordplay and puns (metaphors) of the Edo period and is thought to carry a sophisticated connotation.
