Active during the late Edo to early Meiji periods.
A painter who studied under the Kyoto Kano school (as a disciple of Kanō Eitaku) and served as an official artist to the Imperial Court, continuing the family lineage and artistic tradition; his son, Watanabe Shōeki, was also active in the Ōsaka art world. His family is said to have roots in the historic Minamoto clan (as indicated by his artist's seal, Minamoto Yoshimi)
