Subject:Japanese vase with metal in the ceramic
Posted By: Aaron Tue, Oct 13, 2026 IP: 23.88.152.243

Hello esteemed I.Nagy, do you have any information about this Japanese vase? It is about 6” tall.

I got it at a goodwill in Minnesota. Also, I want to use liquid Bronners soap and my finger to clean the exterior under running water. Would this be harmful to the metal—how to clean?

Thank you kindly,
Aaron

The motifs of cranes and Mt. Fuji depicted on the surface of this vase is considered being close to the "maki-e" technique, using metal powders (such as gold and silver) which are fired into the surface.
Signature reads,
栄嶺 刀 Engraved by Eirei

Regarding your question about using liquid soap for clening. Because the decoration consists of delicate gold and silver gilding there is a risk that it could peel off due to vigorous rubbing or the chemical components in the soap. When cleaning, it is safest to avoid scrubbing vigorously and simply rinse away dust and dirt gently with lukewarm water.

With regards,
I.Nagy
