Subject:Help identifying Japanese’s byobu
Posted By: Clem Cunningham Wed, Oct 14, 2026 IP: 174.207.162.200
Hello, I own a four-panel Japanese byōbu folding screen, approximately 4–5 feet tall, depicting traditional Japanese court figures, flowering trees, and architecture against a gold-colored background. It features decorative silk borders, ornate metal fittings, and what appears to be a hand-painted signature. I am hoping someone knowledgeable about Japanese art can help translate the inscription, identify the possible artist, and determine the approximate age or period of the screen. I have attached photographs of the entire screen, signature, back, and construction details. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
