Subject:Japanese Painting & Print
Posted By: James Clayton Wed, Jun 11, 2008 IP: 71.15.100.94

I found these the other day. About the painting, I cant quite recall if I have seen this artist before or not, but am curious if anyone else has any idea who it is.

Also found a print that is very interesting, but I am not sure about it either.

Thanks in advance for any advice. Much appreciated.

James,

The original print (Wakaume of the Tamaya in Edo-chô itchôme, kamuro Mumeno and Iroka (Edo-chô itchôme, Tamaya uchi Wakaume Mumeno Iroka)) is by Utamaro from circa 1793/4.

Given the condition and appearance of the paper, my guess is that this is a later reprint.

See the link below for an example the original print at the Boston MFA.

Cheers,
Stan

James,

I note that the Boston MFA has a better copy of the print. See link below.

Cheers,

De first image is a Tsugaru kite picture; a kind of folk art from Aomori Prefecture. It is signed "Yuriko".

Guy.
