Subject:Pictures for the Jade Pi folks
Posted By: Stan Wed, Jul 09, 2008 IP: 24.62.190.11

When in Montreal, Canada, I always drop into my favorite shop, Petit Musee, for an ogle. They had a half dozen Jade Pis.

I have only these pictures. If you want to see any particular area, I can blow it up from the hi res photos.

The surface of the single pi is as smooth as glass. The center hole is not cylindrical. The crud in the hole makes me suspicious. Do you think it is worth the $10K Canadian asking price?

I have no horse in this race since I can't afford them. Please feel free to enjoy the pictures and to comment.

Cheers,
Stan

The second picture looks like BC Jade, even more than the first photo.

Dear Stan

Look like Liangzhu bi disc, but this kind of simple bi disc is easy to fake and hard to authenticate.

About antique jades, pls buy them if you like them, do not hope for future investment. Since there is no scienticfic test to date jade, and experts are tricked many time...fakers rule!!

Have fun

P.S. pls do not buy the things like Pinocchio's collection, Chico, and sky ling a ding is ok.

Hi Anita,

I won't be buying any since I don't collect this sort of thing. I thought people might like to see what is out there and talk about the items.

I enjoy this shop but it is expensive. From what little I can tell, the proprietor seems to be fairly honest. I was looking at some very nice jade mountains and he pointed out which were jade and which were serpentine. There was a Hokusai Japanese woodblock print that clearly stated that it was a later printing from recarved blocks.

The shop has an large number of artifacts of all kinds of art (Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Medieval, Chinese, Japanese, preColumbian South American, ...). I expect that no one can be knowledgeable in all those areas and mistakes can happen. I pointed out to an underling that a bijin woodblock print attributed to Eizan was clearly signed by Kunisada. She knew nothing about woodblock prints and passed it off.

It is always fun to stop in. I have for many years and have yet to buy anything. If I ever hit the lottery, I might bring a truck and load it up.

Cheers,
Stan

Dear Stan

If I won lottery I would go to BC and buy an nice big green block of jade, and send to China for carving a whole air-tight 5 claws dragons amidst the clouds coffin for myself, and let see if my body cannot be decomposed for thousands of year...for all eternity.

Have fun
Anita Mui
