Subject:Red bowl identification possibly Kutani
Posted By: Adam Wed, Jul 16, 2008 IP: 66.228.22.144

Hello and thank you for your valuable time, I recently purchased this bowl at an estate sale, I thought it looked like a kutani bowl but have not been able to find one like it. This bowl measures 3-1/2' Tall x 7-1/2" wide, any ideas? does Kutani come unsigned, is it just a modern common bowl?
Thanks again, Adam

Adam,

Your coral red enameled bowl with crackled glaze just might be Japanese Satsuma rather than Kutani. Some fairly rare monochromes, including coral red, were made by the Taizan studio at the end of the Meiji period (the early 20th c). Although your bowl appears to be unmarked, please look very carefully at the white clay under the clear glaze of the base for a small, almost invisible impressed mark.

Here's a bowl similar to what Robert described. It's approx 9" x 9" - Enjoy!
