Subject:Yueyao? 5 dynasty? Shipwreck info sought.
Posted By: phil Fri, Jul 18, 2008 IP: 219.77.105.152

Hi all,
I have this bowl which appears to be a 5 dynasty Yue Yao piece that shows similarities to some wares salvaged from the Cirebon shipwreck off of the Javanese coast.
Apart from any comments on the piece itself which would be most appreciated I am also looking for any information regarding the cargo, (hopefully with photographs) of the Cirebon wreck.

I`ll add further pics after this post passes the moderator.

Many thanks,
Phil.

Phil,

Just some observations: The incising (rather than carving or impressing) suggests middle five dynasties period. The shape, with a strongly everted rim, might be classified as a washer rather than a bowl, although it looks a little too deep for a washer. Also, the diameter of the footring compared to the overall diameter seems to be a bit on the high side. Normally, these pieces have a somewhat smaller foot. It appears to have the appropriate spur marks on the base from the trigonal kiln support used in the five dynasties period. The mellow green color looks right for a period piece, as does the glaze texture.

Hi Robert & thanks very much for taking the time to look at this piece.

I notice that I omitted the dimensions in my first post so I`ll add those now.
Diameter is 4 1/2" & height is just over 1 1/2", (4cm) the diameter of the foot rim is just under 2", (5cm)

I agree with a five dynasty attribution & that, (or late Tang) seems to be the general consensus of opinion going by the responses I received after posting this piece on a chinese language website as well as showing it to several friends of mine who also collect early chinese wares.

I think it`s a bowl rather than a brush washer, the strongly everted rim that you note seems a fairly common feature of pieces from this period although many are also lobed.

I have had difficulties finding good reference pieces however & am still seeking info regarding the Cirebon shipwreck, (I`m not sure it comes from this wreck although it does appear to be a shipwreck piece.)

Here are some extra pics, I`ll also try to add the few reference pieces I`ve managed to turn up so far.

Thanks again for your help, it`s most appreciated.

All the best,
Phil.

Here are some references I`ve managed to find, the first from the Yueyao museum & the second from a fellow collector.
As you can see the first bowl is lobed but has similar everted rim.

Does anyone have further references? They would be most appreciated.

Many thanks,
Phil.
