Subject:old carved jade waterbuffalo from N. Korea
Posted By: sally gross Fri, Jul 18, 2008 IP: 72.71.113.218

My husband and I found this in a small jade shop in Guam when we were stationed there. The shop keeper said it was in a shipment from dug up ancient tombs in N. Korea. I found one in a book years ago that matched mine perfectly--it was worth quite a bit. Can someone tell me anything about this? I took one picture up close so that you can see the carving lines.

Sally:

The resolutions of your pictures posted are simply not good enough to tell anything about this bull. It may not even be jade or may be dyed stone. Can you scratch it?

I cannot imagine why one would find an ancient jade carving in a dug up North Korean ancient tomb. Just the story alone would make me very worried and seems "too good to be true". I hope you did not pay too much for it.

Personally, I will not touch this piece at all no matter how great the story is.

Ancient Korean have much contact with ancient China so the chances of finding Jade in Korea isn't that out of the ordinary.

There are quite a few tombs in North Korea. Especially between the boarder regions of China. These tombs contain the remains of Goguryeo royals. In fact this area is recently listed as world heritage site by UN world heritage.

But tomb looting in a tightly controlled communist country? Well the Chinese did have a saying that goes like "money can make a ghost work the mill..."
