Can anyone read the carvings on this hornbill? Is there an artists signature? Thank you.

Hi Caroline, your horn bill carving is modern and do not buy such things because it encourages hunters to kill these beautiful rare birds, from Borneo. Unfortunately, the majority of these sort of things I seen recently are modern, the old 19th century ones are very finely carved on the front, and seldom have poetry carved in this fashion.

Caroline,

Here is a discussion of our hornbill ivory vase that will provide some background information. You will note that not all hornbills are endangered.

You may get email offers for your item as I did. The offers I got were less than 1/2 the value I've seen similar items sell for at auction. A very similar vase to mine went for about $1300 at auction last year. These objects are in demand.

Cheers,
Stan
