Any thoughts on this particular piece?

There are small lighter colored areas. If you use a needle, you can scrape those areas off, right? I would like to see the reverse side. A sharp close-up picture of a bird would be helpful as well.

This one is either new or a 1900s replica, it tries and replicate the complex multi layered ming jade plaque carving, but it appears boring and mono layered. The edges of the carving is too rounded showing it was polished vigorously probably to remove drill marks. The open work on ming piece is done by drilling a hole and than sawing with a wire and abrasive. Thus the tool mark will be parallel to the cut. The drill marks are always perpendicular to the cut.

Hi lee, like the centre picture!... Very like a roundel I own (and identical to one in the shanghai museum)dated to the Yuan dynasty.

Care to share your roundel that looks like the shanghai museum piece Adam? Curious whenever I see claims of pieces resembling those at reputable museums.

This one is Jin- song dynasty, spring water plaque this one could have been the from the same set as the the one in Shanghai museum due to it's similarity especially the way the goose and the lotus leaf was carved. It shows a hawk chasing a wild goose into the lotus pond. This one came from a English estate whom bought it long ago in China in the early 1900s . 1) plaque from shanghai museum. 2)

Fantastic information and images Lee! Cannot thank you enough for your contribution.

Ernest, the above piece is actually a modern reproduction posted for debate before revelation from the owner. Really appreciate your constructive critiques which will be beneficial for beginners like myself.

I will post the Christies link when its in the catalogue. Boxed up to be taken down monday... Will be in the march sale. Selling off several of my lesser jades and consolidating into better pieces...
Find it shocking my 19th century (or earlier) Zigang pendants are expected to fetch more!! The roundel is only estimated at £2000 !!!
P.S the jade roundels material and shape are differennt to Shanghai museum (Its the motif that is identical-Goose and turtle in Lotus pond)

Nice. Will be keeping an eye on Christie's catalogues for March 2013. Since you mentioned £, I presume the auction will be held in London?

Probably better material for the Zigang pai(s) over the roundel.

yeah the zigang material is top notch, but unbelivable that those years of history count for nothing!
Actually far better than the museum examples, the surface is slightly yellow mottled from age.
The sale is in london, but I am getting it moved to the later sale "ceramics works art" in asia week.
Lower value than they normally accept in that sale but using a qianlong figure as a barter tool :)
Anyone going to the smoke for asia week?

There seems to be two locations for Christie's in London - King Street or South Kensington?

Think the address was something like Brompton rd...
Near chelsea so assume kensington. Had some lovely antique shops nearby. Got to handle a stunning large fencai qianlong charger decorated with a deer , was truly an awesome piece, when generally ceramic leaves me cold! Nice full set of samurai armour too...

I will attend the Christie's sale 2089 on 21 March and have ordered the catalog which should include your pieces. Viewing starts on 15 March and will continue through the sale date. Please list which pieces you will have in the sale.

Now the piece has been moved to the sale of the 13th May, To co-incide with asia week (Hoping for a better price)..The qianlong piece will probably be in the "Fine ceramics and works of art" on the 15th May

Adam, The only Christie's sale listed for 13 May 2013 is a watch sale in Geneva. No sales are listed for 15 may, but The "Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art" Sale 1119, is scheduled for 14 May at the King Street rooms in London. This sale will only last from 10:30 am until 2:30 pm. Rather than purchase a catalog for the small number of lots, we have asked Christie's for an on-line listing with photos so we can view your pieces.

That'll be the one.... It is to be listed as Yuan dynasty, not "Ming or later" as they have consulted with Hong Kong and are happy it is as described as such.
Are you thinking of purchasing roger?
It is a great piece, better than the Shanghai museums example in my opinion (More typically Yuan material, carving etc)

I will not be able to attend the sale but my agent will be there. He will feel and study the piece and call me with his recommendations.

I could never bid on someone-elses recommendations!!n Opinions vary so wildly!! Only true experts can see if the piece has the true flow expected of the era- I presume/hope your agent is an expert in his own right?

If I enter one/any of my Qianlong pieces into the "Fine Ceramics" section I will email you an image of that before the issue of the catalogue.
Just weighing up whether I should cash in one of my smaller pieces (as its my Sisters wedding year, and a visit to australia is approaching) or whether to keep them as a complete collection... Also weighing up which of the pieces is likely to keep on adding value and which have "Peaked" if I do sell any, it is likely to be a small figural celadon piece..not one of my animal carvings or larger vessels

Thank you for your concern, Adam, but my agents aren't rag-and-bone men. Because most of the serious collectors I am familiar with cannot attend every Christie's, Sotheby's, and other auctions world-wide, we often make use of experienced agents who are experts in their fields. My agents haven't disappointed me in the past 50 years but will keep my fingers crossed for the next fifty.

Just checking Roger!! Most of the jade "experts" on here are amateur at best and rely on Wikipedia for their info!!!!

Do you have a business I would of heard of? Although my collection is mostly third generation I do do a fair bit of buying and selling. I work with about ten pieces, hoping that each year the ten have raised me enough profit to add a top quality piece to the permanent collection, I particularly like qianlong animal carvings (imperial workshop) although I do like late ming early Qing dragon belts (of all designs)

Do you know any museum curators in the uk?? We may have mutual friends!

Just wondered if you would be making the exception and travelling to London for Asia week yourself. Normally some good sales and exhibitions on. I know lee from this site sometimes comes down. He is about the only jade guy on this site I respect! The others read wiki for 6 months then try telling you about jade!!!
To be frank I think my time with this site is over! I have been putting in far more than I have been taking away for some time!!!
