Oriental blue and white porcelain table lamp with white metal (silver) mount and base embellished with dragon motifs. Approximately 8 inches in height from base. Would it be possible to identify the period/artist/current value?

Your silvery metal-clad lamp with middle made of what looks like a blue & white lotus pattern jar, was made circa the third quarter of the 20th century. It has an apocryphal base-mark that's hard to read and needs rotation 90-degrees to the left, whereupon it seems to read down and across from the top right as 內府監製 (neifu jianzhi - Made under Inner Palace Supervision). This kind of low-tech fabrication of crafts using stamped and embossed metal pieces in combination with transfer-printed porcelains was quite common in China during the period after WWII.

Here are photos of a small teapot of mine, which looks like it might have come from the same factory that made your lamp. Depending on where you purchase an item, the price usually is less than a true antique, but when the workmanship is topnotch, the value goes up commensurately. I'd rate my teapot just a bit above average, I can't remember the exact price I paid. but it was something between $50 and $75 I think. Your lamp has gotten a little dirty from apparent use, so possibly won't fetch quite that much. You might be able to find current prices on eBay or liveauctioneers.com, using "Chinese silver-clad (or metal-clad) porcelain" as the search term.

Best regards,

Bill H.
