Subject:copy (?) of zhou jade
Posted By: josh stout Thu, May 24, 2018 IP: 173.54.209.189

This is a Zhou dynasty style twisted jade. The flaws in the jade can be scratched but the rest of the material is hard, and the density is 3.12 with an analytical balance and graduated cylinder. I bought it at an estate sale for $30 where larger jades were going for $1000. I think it is likely a copy, but perhaps hand done. The photos do not show tool marks well, but under a hand lens, parallel grooves can be seen. They look like they were done with a drill, but not as close together as with a power drill. They might be from a non-powered drill. I have tried to take pictures from a variety of angles and lighting conditions. Please let me know if additional photos would be useful, and what the best strategy would be. I can't tell if the stain is artificial or real, but it looks like it was part of the rind of the stone rather than something that happened after the stone was carved.

Thanks,
Josh

In which area are you located?
I am able to help you if you would live in southern BC, Canada.

Unfortunately I live in the New York area and am unlikely to BC anytime soon. I appreciate the offer. It seems like many of the details of jade need to be discussed in person.

True, it is mostly a hands on situation. For the specialist it is finger tips, which tell more than the eyes.

Hi, Josh:

A very nice piece, probably made of very high quality nephrite jade. The russett stain on the piece appear to be genuine, it can possible be a burial piece. The "carving" and polishing of this piece are quite exceptional. Your $30 was well spent and I strongly advise you to either bring the piece or send good pictures of it to:

I believe both are in New York.

Thanks for sharing.

Don't give up hope, as one day you may decide to take the Alaska cruise, return from Vancouver.
Many travelers from New York take this interesting trip.

nice piece, of course better pictures would be necessary to authenticate it but it looks good.

description is accurate.. good pick

it looks like good quality Xiuyan yellow jade..(density correspond I believe).

The sculpture and especially the granulosité of polishing that reflects the bright and velvety light at once seems to me correct the sculpture is very sharp, in the sense of precise I think it could actually be an antique jade as to date it exactly I'm not a specialist, but your room looks beautiful
