Subject:Hongshan Jade? Genuine or Fake?
Posted By: Lee Tue, Dec 18, 2018 IP: 2402:1980:1c2:3bd6:2

Dear John, someone just passed to me a jade mask which he claimed is a Hongshan artifact passed down to his father by his grandpa, and now to him.

I would appreciate if you could take a look at the pictures of the jade mask and see whether a preliminary opinion could be form about the mask.

Thank you in advance and I apologize for all the inconveniences caused by this obviously an amatuer request.

Thanks again.

Regards,

CT

Definitely not genuine.

Most likely not Hongshan. Genuine and rare Hongshan
jades have an identifiable zoomorphic style. I cannot find any masks
related to that time period. This object does appear to be hand carved.
The material appears to be created from stone. There is a similar
degradation to the front and back sections, that is either from a natural
burial or cleverly faked. There appears to be wear in the attaching holes
possibly from use. You could determine the material used with a specific
gravity or scratch test.
Is there a Chinese link to this piece?
