Subject:Trying to get some clarity about this old chair
Posted By: Werner Sat, Feb 23, 2019 IP: 2003:cb:b3d3:ee0a:3c

Trying to get some clarity about this old chair. It is… for its size and in relation to the amount of the used wood… very heavy!!! Brought back from Djakarta/Indonesia in the 60s. Bought from an Antique-Dealer. On one pic you can see remains/leftovers from inlays. Not sure wether they are from bone or ivory.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks a lot,

best regards,

Werner

Looks Indo / Portuguese / Goa.
It's definitely ebony and is likely very old indeed; ie: 17th/18thC. Interesting thing. Pity it's lost all of it's mother of pearl inlays, it must have been just magnificent in it's day.
There are people who could restore it, but I would recommend you find a conservator.

Thank you very much, Kirk Sun, for your assessment. Thats very interesting, as I thought it came from one of the plenty Indonesian islands.

Best regards,

Werner
