Subject:Unsual Famille Noire Vase - Can Anyone Help??
Posted By: Nathan Browne Mon, Feb 25, 2019 IP: 217.42.50.224

Hello,
I am new to the forum - it is a great find! I was hoping that someone may help me identify a vase that I bought recently. I have looked for some time but cannot find similar. I did my best but failed! It stands 60cm tall and it has been badly broken in the past in many pieces but someone has put it back together. It looks like handwriting on the base but I cannot read the reign mark as it is a bit blurred in places. It also has a small two character mark impressed near the rim of the base. Can anyone with more knowledge assist? I really appreciate any help given. Many thanks.

The height is 45cm not 60cm - apologies!

The signature under your vase is not a Chinese reign mark, but Japanese. On the right it reads: Dai 大 Nippon 日本 (= Great Japan). The 2 characters next to that are unreadable to me, just like the impressed mark.
The 3 characters under Dai Nippon are Ko (or Hikari) 光 ?? Zo 造 (= made by Ko??).
Perhaps one of the more experienced translators of this forum can fill in the blanks?

Handwritten Dai Nippon marks together with the artist’s signature date to the Meiji Period (1868-1911), reflecting the greatly increased nationalism of that period (source: Gotheborg.com)

Regards,
Martin.
