Subject:How did you get started? Deeply involved? And any good resources in Los Angeles?
Posted By: Christian Tue, Feb 26, 2019 IP: 98.152.145.114

Hi all,

I was an art dealer on cruise ships for many years but now have taken a more normal career path. However when I was last in Japan, I visited that Hara Shobo Gallery and picked up some Japanese woodblock prints - not only were they reasonable, I've really fallen in love.

I would love to spend more of my time getting involved, learning, and interacting with other knowledgeable members. Where would you start? and what would you do? Also, are there any good resources in LA?

This isn't my area but there are good online resources for woodblock prints, eg: https://ukiyo-e.org/ but I don't know about collectors groups.
LACMA's Japanese Art Acquisitions Group undoubtedly includes informed and interested others, some surely knowing something about ukiyo-e.

This may not work for you but...

At an exhibition of Japanese prints at the Peabody Essex Museum, I sought out the Japanese art curator and told her that she incorrectly attributed a print by Kuniyoshi. Her husband was the Chinese art curator. We got invited into the museum storage and went through their snuff bottles and had a little snap 'ID the print artist' game as she flipped through a bunch of Japanese prints. We got together from time to time until they were let go during the Great Recession.

Also, check your local museum. They may have groups of collectors and other interested parties. The Boston MFA had an Asian Art Group that we belonged to for a while. They met once a month or so at a person's house and people brought examples from their collections for discussion. They organized trips to NYC for Asian Art Week, and lectures, etc.
