The mark reads: 壽 Kotobuki in native Japanese or Ju in Sino-Japanese, meaning: Longevity.
Kotobuki is also a Japanese last name, so perhaps this is the artist or studio?
Kutani ware, 1930-1940 I guess.
Regards,
Martin.

Hi Martin, I believe those nearly upside down characters may give you almost as much trouble as they give me. That red one looks to me a bit less like 壽/Kotobuki/Ju and more like 嘉/Ka/yomisuru/yoi, meaning applaud; praise; esteem; happy; auspicious (and the first part of the Jiaqing Emperor's reign title in China). However, you'll always have the edge on me when it comes to deciding the Japanese meanings.

Cheers,

Bill H.

Bill, Steve,

Mea culpa, Bill is absolutely right, I was too fast in my opinion.
It's always nice to have a backup like Bill.
Thanks,
Martin.

Stamped marks like this are typical voor the early Showa Period, so in my opinion 1925-1940.

Martin.
