Subject:Wucai enamelled plates - Need help to date ??
Posted By: MIkey Wed, May 15, 2019 IP: 2001:56a:76b3:1800:9

Thought I would give this forum a try since I have been unable to research these plates any further. I believe they are Chinese for the Japanese market done in Wucai enamels. There is a signature which I have not completely translated. The plates are about 4" and there is sand grit along the footrim and a few chips along the outer edge of the plates. Hope for your opinions on possible age. Thank you

FYI. I got a reply from an alternate source. Apparently these are Chinese done in the Ming style.

Here's a link to a Japanese language website, showing images of a dish with much the same mark in a similar palette and pattern, which the machine translation also indicates to be Ming period. I can't vouch for such translations, but perhaps I. Nagy or others can comment.

If the assessment of Ming is correct, the mark on your dish would read "Made by Huang Shengjia (Huang Sheng-jia zhi - 黃生佳製). The online dish has the same name but uses Zuo/作/Made on the end instead of Zhi/製. The dish shown online looks to have a bit more age on it than the one here, but of course, looks can be deceiving.

Best regards,

Bill H.

寅生佳製 - Yisheng jiazhi -
(Finely made by Yinsheng)
According to Japanese net sites they are late Ming early Qing style, Jingdezhen made wucai enamel products.
In Japan these products were called Nankin Akae
南京赤絵 wares.

And thank you I. Nagy for correcting my foolish error in the artisan's name.
