Between its bordering fret and the central Yin-Yang medallion, the face of your octagonal tazza bears the reign mark and probably also is of the period of the Qing Tongzhi Emperor (1862-74). The top of the tazza shows the 'Bāguà' (八卦) the eight divinatory trigrams of the Book of Changes (Yìjīng - 易經, often rendered as 'I Ching').

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thank you so much Bill H..... my Dad knew all the history of his collectibles. You gave me much to look up and read. I enjoy learning the history of various art pieces. Many thanks!

Does the seal actually state something? I can't tell if it's the Chinese language - not too clear to me. I do thank you for all the information. Does the seal name the artist, region, year or any specific information? I found a similar tazza on-line with a different seal and slightly different border. I was wondering how to compare the two with dates. Very interested.

The mark, in seal script, is shown on its left side. When flipped 90-degrees right, into proper reading position, it says "Tong zhi nian zhi" (同治年製) in mandarin pinyin transliteration. Literally, this means "Made in the Tongzhi years" but usually is read as "Made during the Tongzhi reign" (1862-1874).

You'll find much more information online, starting with wikipedia.org (link).

Best regards,

Bill H.
