Such four-character marks of "Made during the Kangxi Reign" (Kang xi nian zhi) were in use during the late Qing and Republic era, in addition to the modern era. The Kangxi reign featured a substantially different prunus and cracked ice pattern, wherein the cracks actually were drawn, not replaced by wavy brush marks. See pix below.

Best regards,

Thank you Bill for such interesting and informative response's :) Could i ask a question i had been informed that the second character on the right bottom on this mark with the line under it was older than if it were four dots seperated is this a fallacy or a true was to determine an older mark on such marked pieces?? Sorry if this is a useless response but i would like to get to grips with some of the info surrounding my interests in the subject :) Regards Dan

The second character at bottom right in the mark is 'Xi'/熙, which is the second character in the reign title 'Kangxi'/康熙, and is written in a semi-cursive script called 'Xingshu'/行書. The characters for Kangxi are formed in this comment in standard characters called Kaishu/楷書 which comes in several varieties and indeed does show the fire radical 'Huo'/灬 arranged in four dots all in a row.

Check out the Chinese calligraphy link, where you'll find a chart that lists the periods when various calligraphic styles came along. It indicates that Kaishu standard forms came into being from 200-400 CE, while the cursive script forms appeared in the fourth century CE, which would be the 300s. I believe this indicates that, generally speaking, Kaishu as a category existed before the advent of Xingshu. Perhaps I. Nagy, who's a master of these brush strokes, can add perspective.

Best regards,
