Subject:Chinese Shanshui? Scroll
Posted By: Bridget Shakespeare Sun, Jun 14, 2020 IP: 86.155.108.69

Can anyone help to translate the writing on this framed scroll please. It has 2 seal marks but they are illegible. An idea of age would also be very helpful, many thanks

Inscriptions,
先生 不越路而與人話
遭先生於路 趨而進
正立拱手 先生與之言則對
不與之言則趨退
(When he is following his) teacher, he should not quit the road to speak with another person. When he meets his teacher on the road, he should hasten towards him, and stand with his hands joined across his breast. If the teacher speak to him, he will answer, if he do not, he will retire with hasty steps.

This is a citation from the Book of Rites,(Qu Li 1) translated into English by prof. James Legge

I think it is max.150 years old.

With regards,
I.Nagy
