Subject:Early woodblock translation help
Posted By: Casey Mon, Aug 31, 2020 IP: 107.77.173.41

Hi all,

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I have an early Japanese woodblock which I am struggling to nail down the artist. Hoping someone here can help. Thanks again!

Casey

冩-盆左頭 - Picture of a full tray, head on left
First signature,
雪塘 - Settō
Seal,
山田 - Yamada

Yamada Settō 山田雪塘 Year of birth and death
unknown. Active in the beginning of 19 c. in Hakushima ( a part of Hiroshima). Learned painting at Matsumura Goshun in Kyōto.

Second signature,
亀成 - Kisei
Seal,
龜 - Ki (Kame)

Most probably, Aoki Kisei 青木亀成 (Year of birth and death unknown) was a Haiku poet in the same time

Probably he three haikus on the picture are from him.

With regards,
I.Nagy
