Would anyone be able to help me with the approximate period and material of these figurines?

Judging only by the trace white scratches on the pieces, the figures appear to be carved from soapstone. Try scratching the underside with fingernail or plastic. Soapstone is soft and will leave a white mark.

If that fails, a streak test, hardness test, specific gravity, microscopic grain analysis, and refractive index would lead to a more conclusive answer.
