Subject:Chinese watercolour of Zhouzhuang? and artist and seal question
Posted By: richard Sat, Jan 09, 2021 IP: 31.55.252.45

Could some one please tell me who the artist is of this what I believe is a Chinese 70's or 80's watercolour, what the writing and 2 seals mean?
Google translates part of the writing as Autumn?

I am trying to learn about these red seals on prints and paintings but like anything Chinese this is a bit of a minefield for a novice hoping to find the Chinese Rembrand or Van Gogh in a charity shop..:¬).

Thank you experts for your time as always.

Stay safe, stay healthy.

Richard

Pictographic seal,

Leisure seal (Right lower corner),
江畔八所 - Eight places by the river

Yes, I also think it is from Zhouzhuang.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Dear I Nagy,

Apologies for my igorance, but what is a Pictograohic seal and what is a Leisure Seal and why are they both on this water colour?
Do they tell you who the actual artist of this water colour is. or do they add any value to a water colour?

Stay safe and stay healthy and as always thank you for sharing your time and knowledge with the novices on this board.

Best wishes Richard

Dear Richard,
Pictographic or portrait seals are like kindergarden signs, mostly visualizing animals (in this case it is a running deer - if I am right)), birds, fishes, etc. It is used by artists who don't want to reveal their identities, but they reveal the user's character.

Leisure seal is a seal that expresses the artist's
favorite word(s), motto, phrase, citation etc.In this case the artist wanted to emphasize that he or she is specializing on painting of the eight scenic spots along the river.

There are dozens of artists who make a living by painting such pictures in the four major water towns near Shanghai. That's why there is no way to identify the artist without proper signature and seal.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Dear I Nagy,

How very interesting and I learned something again! This time about seals and paintings.
It really is an absoute minefield for a novice like me, to try and find a rarety or geuine old chinese item between so many fakes and reproductions!
As for this watercolour, I liked it because it had the two people in it. This was the reason I bought it in the first place. Thank you once again.

Kind Regards, stay safe and stay healthy.

Richard
