Subject:Help needed with seal on print
Posted By: Horst Graebner Wed, Mar 31, 2021 IP: 88.69.131.18

I have a hanshira-e mounted as a hanging roll. It is very similar, but not identical, to a print by Katsukawa Shunshō.
The Shunshō print is here: https://japanesegallery.com/shunsho-katsukawa-nasu-no-yoichi-shooting-a-fan-hashira-e
My print doesn't have a signature, just a seal that I can't read.
Does somebody has any idea?

seal reads ike 池 like in ikeda

your print is however not matching the fine example of the british museum. So its probably cut later after the model of shunsho, could be as a study or just by a less able printer for a local market.

dear horst graebner,
compositions are often used again and again. so there might be an influence or even more. to discuss this it would be helpful to see your painting and the seal though.

Seal reads,
池 - Ike
It looks like a publisher's mark - but I can'd find
publisher with this logo.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Dear Peter, dear I.Nagy,
thanks for reading!
I agree with I.Nagy: it's more of a publisher's mark than an artist's seal. But I couldn't find anything suitable either.
So the print remains an unsolved mystery (at least for the time being).
Best
Horst
