Subject:Carved Japanese woodblock plate-id artist etc
Posted By: Michael Sat, Jun 05, 2021 IP: 79.75.235.49

Hi,
Is it possible for someone to identify the artist (could be Yoshiiku?), sumo wrestler, publisher and date from the photos of my woodblock plate.
The photos have been reversed and made negative to help matters.

Title cartouche,
小野川才助 - Onogawa Saisuke
(Sumo wrestler 1830-1873)

Censor's seal (Round)

Publisher's mark,
馬木口宗 - Umaki 口mune
(The 3rd character is missing)

With regards,

Most grateful to you as always Nagy-san.

The reverse of the wooden plate has a series of animal designs with the title above and perhaps artist?
Could you give your thoughts?
Best
Michael

The first kanji can hardly be read because of the reflection, it could be: A New Collection of Monsters (Shinpan bakemono no zukushi) [新板化物のつくし].
Like the date seal on the other side, this could also be 1859.
Another photo might be helpful.
The publisher is "Kisō han" [木宗版] (= Kiya Sōjirō).

Thanks Horst.

Another photo in its original state. Is this any more of assistance?

Maybe "Newly printed complete list of animals" (shinpan kemono zukushi - 新版けものづくし).
I couldn't find a copy of the print on the internet.

Little addition:
I wondered about the publisher. I can't find a “馬 木 口宗 - Umaki 口mune” or any similar.
With this type of seal, the reading is usually in two columns from top to bottom and the first column is part of the address.
So it would be “馬 木宗” and the reading “Ba Kisō” is possible.
"Kisō" was the seal name of "Kiya Sōjirō" and its address was "Ba"kurochō yonchōme.
This is more likely for me.

Here http://portlandartmuseum.us/mwebcgi/mweb.exe?request=record;id=81404;type=101 is a print with “馬喰四木宗板“: Bakuro-yon Kisō han (published [by] Kisō, [located at] Bakuro[-chō] yon[chōme].
