Subject:A pair of small bronze foo dogs
Posted By: Tony Sun, Jun 06, 2021 IP: 23.243.126.110

Dear friends,
They are cute, small and made of metal (bronze?).
I really appreciate your help and would love to receive inputs on from which culture and period them are from 🙏😊

Hi,

I see a lot of this sort of foo dog for sale in Japan. They call them "Shishi" over there.

Just looking at them, my guess would be that they're iron, painted to look like bronze. A quick way to tell is to get a magnet. If they're magnetic, well they're iron. Also if you can see any small rust spots, means they're iron (you might actually be able to see some on the third photo on the rear leg of the dog - I can't quite tell).

My guess would be 20th to 21st century in terms of age.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Dear Suzume,
Thanks very much for your time and kind help!!!
It is very informative the background you provided, and your insightful inputs are very appreciated! I will find a magnet to test whether they are made of iron :)
Best,
Tony

I agree.
These are Japanese shishi dogs. Modern.
Unlikely to be bronze judging by the patina. Bronze is heavy whereas iron and cold caste are lighter.
