Subject:Help translating the label on jade carving case
Posted By: Taylor Sun, Jul 25, 2021 IP: 162.253.50.222

I have a large case of jade statues. There are 3 females and 5 male figurines that were carved out of a lighter color jade. There are two wood stands that 4 figurines sit on each. The case or box is blue fabric that secures closed with two small pieces of ivory or bone. The case has a label on one side that I can’t read.
If someone could please help me translate the writing on the label I would really appreciate your help. Or if you have any information of what this is called or where it came from.

Thank you in advance for your help.

They are called “ eight immortals”. Please see the link. 7 male, and 1 female.

They were made of jade.
They are worth a ton of money. Don’t let anyone fool you.

Hi Pei,
Could you kindly explain why these are jade in your opinion based on just a few blurry images in a box!!

Interesting carving
But inconclusive as to what material they are made from etc.
If what you say about the box is correct then perhaps they are, or at least the box is mid 20th century if not earlier, in my submission.
Regards,
Mark

Did you do the correct scratch test.

Thank you for your reply. Im not sure what you mean regarding the color? It is a very light greenish white color.

Could you explain the scratch test also please

The post by Pei is nonsense and misleading based purely on the images. Pei is is making assumptions based on writing on the side of the box!
The images posted are blurry and inconclusive. Further tests as suggested by esteemed member Ernest Wilhelm are warranted along with more HD quality images.
Just so you are aware just because the box states 'jade' does not necessarily mean that that they are. They could be.
The one thing in your favor is if the handles are either ivory or bone. Modern or post 80's are plastic.

Compare the color in the photo with the carving. Is it the the same, or is one a darker green.
Scratch test: take a strong needle, make a 2-3 mm scratch, use enough pressure. It has to be be a tiny white or black scratch.

I took more photos and did the scratch test.

You are correct there are two different colors. Each row of 5 sit on a wooden stand and one character of each stand is a lighter colored green. The lighter also looks more textured and not very translucent.. The darker colored figures are more translucent.

The scratch test was unsuccessful. There was no white or black residue. I used a lot of pressure with a thick needle and it had no affect.

I also added a pic of the bone or ivory closure

These are modern eight-mortals "jade" carvings that were made for tourists. Made of xiu yu that is serpentine, not jadeite or nephrite and can be scratched.
