Subject:Oriental Harbour Scene Tapestry Skyscrapers
Posted By: Richard Wed, Sep 22, 2021 IP: 82.24.252.252

This is a large tapestry of a harbour scene with high rise buildings along the waterfront. There are characters to the back of the frame - can anyone please help me identify which place this is and to translate the characters please

I can't identify the place.
The inscription on the back of frame;
装織畫用 - For (the) woven tapestry

With regards,

Your possibly woven in China "tapestry" undoubtedly was machine-made on a Jacquard-type loom from what looks like a hand-tinted black & white photo of Hong Kong taken circa the 1920s-30s. The harbor view looks south at what is now known as Queens Road Central, the main business district on Hong Kong island. The Peak Tram line is visible as it slants upward slightly to the left in the background, above what was then the extent of mid-level apartment construction. The two "Junk" type sailboats in the foreground became a well-known icon of Hong Kong during the latter British colonial period, but the only one regularly visible when I worked there in the 1970s was said to be sponsored by the tourism authority.

Best regards,

Bill H.

This is a scene of Hong Kong as viewed from approximately the primary Star Ferry terminal on Kowloon. The Bank of China building is there, so the image on which it is based postdates 1950; I believe the Hong Kong City Hall building is also visible; if so, the source image also postdates that building's opening in 1962. However, the image was sourced before 1972, because there is no sign of Jardine House, which was finished that year.

Rat, your superior wisdom benefits us all with your better recall of the Hong Kong landscape and landmark construction. You reckon I spent too much time at night in Wanchai?

Haha, I lived in HK in the mid 80s and love the place dearly.
