Subject:Japanese inro figure and marks
Posted By: Tom Aspden Thu, Sep 23, 2021 IP: 31.205.30.228

Hi,

I've just received this inro today, and one of the designs on its of a Japanese man with his arms crossed, and there is an inscription to the right. My first impression was that he looked the sort of figure one would see depicted in a Woodblock Print.

If anybody recognises the picture or can translate the text in the cartouche, I would be most grateful!

Regards,
Tom

You are right. It is derived from a print by Tôshûsai Sharaku (東洲齋写楽). See the link below.

Cheers,
Stan

URL Title :Sharaku

Thanks for the reply, I can see the similarities between them now. I don't suppose you were able to make out the characters in the top right, as they don't seem to match any shown on the print?

Regards,
Tom

I'm sorry. I have no Japanese language skills. If we are lucky, I. Nagy will help us out.

Cheers,
Stan
