Subject:Unusual Chinese Wooden Object
Posted By: Peter Thu, Jan 27, 2022 IP: 178.165.179.112

Hello.
An acquaintance has asked me my opinion of an item that has (supposedly) been in his family for at least a century.
It appears to be some sort of lidded wooden container, although my acquaintance seems to think that it is the upper part of a larger vessel.
The images painted do seem to be well executed and not the usual low standard found on tourist 'antique' wares - assuming, of course, that they are not transfers.

To be honest, I've got no idea, as I only collect ceramics. Therefore, any help/suggestions will be gratefully received.

Probably a Chinese bridal dowry box.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Supposedly these are for storing rice and yes, often giving as part of the dowry. Yours is a much nicer version of the complete one shown in the link I have attached here.
