Subject:Japonese or China Sculpture ?
Posted By: MarcG Tue, Apr 26, 2022 IP: 77.141.95.229

Hello everybody,
Could someone identify this sculpture, bought a few years ago from an Asian antique dealer? The seller told me it was Chinese. I am having trouble determining its material. It seems to be made of bronze (it is very heavy). It looks quite similar to Japanese Dogu statuettes (but these are made of clay). It may be an imitation, but then I don't see the point of casting it in bronze.
Thanks for any help.
Marc

In my opinion your figure looks more Central or possibly South America’s to me. And I would not expect round eyes on a Japanese Dogu figure. Others my have a correction or better information.

Thanks very much for this very important information.
Indeed, the two sculptures are very similar. The only difference is in the engraved patterns of the little concentric circles. 3 on my sculpture, 2 on the New York gallery sculpture. But the dimensions are almost similar. The New York sculpture is slightly smaller. Very strange, isn't it ! Is my work a copy or both ?
weird weird, did you say weird?
