Subject:Kutani or Satsuma
Posted By: David Thu, Apr 28, 2022 IP: 90.254.195.170

Hello All
Is this Satsuma or Kutani? The typical kutani characters are not there and the typical first kanji after the mon for Satsuma is missing too,so I'm puzzled. It looks maybe late Taisho to early Showa when one looks at the nationalistic type cartouches although the battles and militaria depicted look late 19th century to me. Thanks in advance. The pot is lovely with fabulous decoration and I would love to know what the mark says.
Best wishes
David

Kutani ware from the early 20th century.
The mark is displayed upside down.
One side of the merk reads: Watano 綿野.
The other side of the mark is too vague for me to read.
Probably the mark of Watano Kichiji (1859-1934).
He opened a shop Watano Kichiji Shoten in Yokohama in 1880 and was one of the biggest Kutani export merchants.
Regards,
Martin.

Hello Martin.
Thanks so much for your help and expertise again. Sorry about the mark being upside down. I tried to rotate it but it kept on flipping itself. Fabulous info and I will cherish it. This crazy pot is mine and I will look after it for years and years.
Best wishes
David
