Subject:Carved Wood Thai Buddha Age
Posted By: Steve Gridley Thu, Apr 28, 2022 IP: 100.16.136.74

I picked up this carved wood Thai Buddha with inscription. The carving is 24.5cm tall and looks to have some age to it. I was informed it dated from the late 18th century. Can anyone correctly identify and give an approximate age? And what language is the writing in? Thanks in advance.

MY first impression was Burmese or Shan. A determination of whether it is Thai lies across Thailand's border with Burma and its Shan State, as Burmese script looks a bit like Thai writing but has differences readily seen by the trained eye. I learned some spoken Burmese when assigned to the US Embassy in Rangoon more than 30 years ago, but my tutors left me ignorant of the written language.

Best regards,

Bill H.

I think the inscription is in thai language.
Unfortunately your buddha is not very old (20th century).

Thank you both for your input. Although it would have been nice to have an old piece, I also find there is much to learn from studying modern pieces.

Looks like Khom script, sometimes called Thai Khom or Khmer Khom. Used on Buddhist items only, and pretty much only readable by (a few) Thai or Khmer monks.
Likely early 20th C.
