Subject:Silk Embroidery For Date & Possible Location
Posted By: Dave H Tue, May 03, 2022 IP: 23.230.46.220

Looks to be hand silk embroidery and I'm guessing Chinese made. I have not been able to find any information on what time frame and where this was made and am hoping some one may recognize this style and pattern. Thanks to all ......

Panels like these were made in China primarily for export to the West in the late 19th and early 20th century. They use silk embroidery (the so-called "forbidden" stitch) on a silk ground.

Thanks so very much Robert as you have really expanded my knowledge. I followed up on your "forbidden stitch" and it looks exactly as described. Appreciate the time frame you mentioned as now I have a better idea on what I have.
Thanks again & have a good one ....

My Chinese embroidered panels turned out to be virtually identical to yours except being what look to be modern machine-woven borders. Partially obliterated labels on their reverse sides could only be read as "eking China", no doubt Beijing where the embroidery factory is famous for having produced so-called "Peking knot" or "forbidden Stitch" panels. Since "Peking", being the Wade-Giles instead of PRC pinyin manner of transliteration, would make them identifiable as pre-1949.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Excellent and thanks for posting Bill. For me it gives a possible transition in time from dates to different styles of panels.
Thanks again & have a good one .....
