Subject:1 of 3 Satsuma vases with translation/date requests
Posted By: Chris Sun, Jul 03, 2022 IP: 70.179.57.71

Hello,

Below are a couple photos of one of three Satsuma vases I have with something other than or in addition to the standard "Dai Nippon" or "Satsuma" kanji.

Am I correct in interpreting the last two kanji (in the 3rd column) to read "Zan tsukuru?" Any assistance translating the first of those last three kanji would be warmly welcomed and appreciated, as would any assistance dating the vase, and I thank you all in advance for the same.

Kind Regards,
Chris

The mark reads: Dai Nippon 大日本 - Satsuma 薩广 Yaki 焼 - Ariyama (or Yuzan) 有山 Zo 造 (= Great Japan - Satsuma ware - Made by Ariyama / Yuzan).
The name might be Ariyama (native Japanese reading) or Yuzan (Sino Japanese reading).
Tsukuru (native Japanese reading) is the same as Zö (Sino Japanese reading), but Zö is normally used.
The 2nd Kanji of Satsuma 薩摩 is written in a short way 广.
I have no information about this artist.
Regards,
Martin.

Thank you Martin for the translation - it is sincerely appreciated. Are there by chance any resources you might reccomend to further research the artist's name?

Kind Regards,
Chris

Hello Chris,
I've been studying antique Japanese marks since my retirement 11 years ago and always try to find out more of every new artist that I come across. In this case there were hardly any resources about this Ariyama / Yuzan.
But to help you on your way to decipher Japanese names on ceramics, you might use these links to
to make a start:
- Assembling Kanji characters: https://jisho.org/#radical
- Find out Japanese names: https://jisho.org/search/梅月
(replace the 2 Kanji with the ones you like to research).
Japanese names are a bit tricky, there is the native Japanese pronouncing of a name (KUN-reading p.e. Ariyama) and the Sino-Japanese pronouncing (ON-reading p.e. Yuzan). And it's not always clear which is the correct name. Artist names and first names tend to be Sino-Japanese, family names / surnames are usually native Japanese.
Good luck.
Regards,
Martin.

Hi Martin,

A warm and sincere thank you for the wonderful resources, as well as the explanation behind the ethnic/etymological roots of Japanese surnames and first names!

Kind Regards,
Chris
