Subject:Sagemono and netsuke for age estimation request and translation
Posted By: Chris Fri, Jul 08, 2022 IP: 2600:8801:fb00:a16:4

Hello Again,

Everyone has been wonderful helping me identify the ukiyo-e, ceramics, and metalware in my modest Japanese collection, and I thank you alliance again for the same.

Now I am moving on to organics, mainly ivory and wood items. First up is a tobacco pouch purchased at auction in the 1970s. The pouch os made of embroidered leather. The flap plate is plain and undecorated. There is no signature I can find anywhere on the pouch.

Any help in translating the artist's name on the netsuke and any estimate in dating the pouch would be warmly appreciated and I thank you all in advance for the same. I will attach an additional photo of the interior once this post has gone live.

Kind Regards,
Chris

PS - Martin, I did use that resource you suggested (jisho.org) but I was unable to find an exact match for the kanji - the closest I found was also a 5-stroke kanji but not the same one.

Below is a photo of the inside flap - leather appears painted (as opposed to embroidered as is the outside) and the metal pate is plain, unsigned, and unadorned.

I hope this assists the resident SMEs with estimating the age of this piece, and once again thank you all in advance for any assistance you may be able to provide.

Kind Regards,
Chris

I think the mark is 正山, and that could/would be Shozan ( Masayama).

You’re welcome.

🤣
I was wondering why you had called me Marote Mon. I was thinking ‘Mon’ would be some kind of form of Japanese politeness when using someone’s name. But now I see you got this from the message info. Mon isn’t part of my name, it’s part of the date: MONday 😄
