Subject:Japan: Hanging Scroll Kakejiku info?
Posted By: Michael Tue, Nov 01, 2022 IP: 2601:646:4000:70c0:c

Hi all,
Looking for any thoughts/opinions on: age, subject matter, artist, and range this would usually sell for in your experience [if you are a scroll collector 😊]. It’s about 7ft approximate length.

~I was told this signature is 竹堂謹字 = carefully/humbly written by Chikudō.

~There is a hand written piece of masking tape on the back that states “Kannon-Sama.” I spent some time reading on that, but this isn’t my wheelhouse, so not even sure that fits the imagery we have here.

Thanks in advance, Michael

Signature,
竹堂謹寫 - Carefully/humbly painted by Chikudō
Seal,
竹堂 - Chikudō

Chikudō art-name was very common from the late Edo period to the Meiji era, e.g.,
1, Kishi Chikudō 岸竹堂 1826-1897
(Different signature and seal)
2, Ki no Chikudō 紀竹堂 -1820
(Different signature and seal - few available online reference pictures)
3, Sugii Chikudō 杉井竹堂 1792-1822
(No available pictures)
4,Takahashi Chikudō 高橋竹堂 1898-?
(No available pictures)
5, Arai Chikudō 新井竹堂 1820s
(No available pictures)

Kannon-sama is the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy

With regards,
I.Nagy
