Subject:Role of Seki Sanjuro by kuniyoshi
Posted By: Tom Aspden Sun, Mar 12, 2023 IP: 146.199.136.178

I need a bit of help identifying the role that Seki Sanjuro II is playing in this print (I suspect it is written to the right of his name).

I would also be grateful if anyone can offer an opinion on the publisher's mark; the closest I have come is possibly Odaya Takichi, but I don't feel confident with this one!

Thanks!

Seki Sanjurô II as the otokodate 'Dekiboshi no Saburobei jitsuha Aizu no Shichirô' (The star of stars Saburobei, in reality Shichirô of Aizu) in the play 'Hana-ni tori Sakigake Soga', performed 1st lunar month 1832, Nakuramura-za in Edo.

Another copy is in the Waseda.

IMO, the publisher must be Ôtaya Sakichi (Kinrindô).

Marks: seal サ (sa) nr. 01-026, publisher 422.

Thanks very much Guy, it seems I was close with the publisher but foiled by poor translation, and thank you for the identification, it was suggested that it was an 1830s print, so it's good to see it confirmed!
