The general feeling for me is acceptable for late Cizhou, probably not Song or Yuan, but later - Ming perhaps. The footring appears correct. The only thing that gives me some odd feeling is the reproduction of ring matting technique (a Tang metal art style - the continuous circles of the background). The phoenix is much more Ming in style than Song. Condition is not excellent.

Richard,

An interesting piece. I have not seen Cizhou-type wares made of clay that fired red (high iron content).

The base looks rough for perhaps more reason than kiln grit. Does it look to you like there is coarse material mixed in with the clay?

Your picture of the foot looks almost as if the ware is white where there is a chip. Is this an illusion? Could the foot be colored red with a wash?

Best regards,
Judy
