Greetings to all forum members,
I am a student of Chinese art desperately looking for this book.
Does anyone have access to it and could give me a quick help?

Sorry if this post is inappropriate.

What specifically do you need?

Dear Rat,

Thank you very much for your reply.
I am writing an article about Zhang's painting. In this catalog there is an essay that is essential for my research.
At the moment, I do not have access to this book or any library that has it in its catalog. Also, none of the few options for sale are affordable or ships to my country and I am also prevented from traveling because of the pandemic. So I'm asking someone for help to send me photos of the text. It is the only possible way for me to have access to it.
(I need about 15 pages, less than 5% of the total book. So, there is no problem related to copyright in sharing photos from such a small sample for academic purposes.)
If you could help, please, contact me on
[email protected]
Warmest Regards.

Am sending you the foreword (p. 8) and a number of the pages that follow it. As you will see, however, the essay does not begin on page 21. Since I don't have a copy of the book, I am relying on your information to be accurate.

Dear Fernandez,

Soth. has still the catalogue online.

Soth. places selling chin. works should have a copy too to work with.

if you are really desperate....
Here is a book searching engine going through online listings :

But honestly, shouldnt you study rather a good painter like Pan Tianshou? Why the mediocre one....

Not sure about Zhang being mediocre. Many of the forgeries of his work are certainly disturbing, but his authentic paintings are genuinely amazing. Pan Tianshou was the master of design and composition, but he tended to stay within his own unique style. Zhang Daqian mastered many styles and messages.

Dear rb and John,
Thank you very much for the answers and for your considerations! It is always great to discuss 20th century chinese painters. I like both Pan Tianshou and Zhang Daqian, they are great painters in Chinese history.
I am studying Zhang at the moment because I consider him to be a very representative artist of his time, and I am also very interested in the years he lived in America.
I agree with John, Zhang was a very prolific and an artist of many styles.
Wish you all the best,
Fernandes

Zhang Daqian is not mediocre, his painting is. He is a master of eclecticism and the grand master of the eclectics. One simply has to admire how he is playing the market and the academic world to place his forgeries (probably his most ambitious works) and create his own fame.
Oh yes he was a very successful man!
But his painting is simply lacking quality.
I can not say that his compositions are very convincing to imagine them as part of the living world. His calligraphic brushwork has not the quality to create movement and his paintings have what I would call a poetic indifference.

Just look to the paintings sold by sothebys out of the the Meiyuntang collection to have this a bit related to the initial post and to give you a safe ground regarding the forgeries.
The landscapes all have overloaded compositions, always were is something unnecessary. Trees are lifeless, structures flat, lacking depth, because of his calligraphic limits. Because his brush is not moving well there is no flowing water and no wind. Unthinkable in a painting of Huang Binhong or Wang Yuanqi.
In the simple compositions in boneless style the branches have no tension and the flowers look dense. While the works of Wang Xuetao are like windows into a living garden, Zhangs boneless paintings are like woodblock printed postcards.
The worst but are his figures. They look like dolls made of wood. His brush could not create the impression of a falling garment and the the faces are dull and without movement. How different are the deep faces provided by Ren Yi, the melancholic figures of Fu Baoshi. Even the simple, comic like characters of Feng Zikai are full of life.

Yes there is great financial value in Zhangs works. But than I look at his paintings I only can see careless executed compositions which seem not to have a poetical intention at all.
Now if the painter does not really care, why should I?

What a difference is a visit in the Pan Tianshou Jinianguan in Huangzhou. Everything is alive, the pine trees are creaking, the wind is blowing, water is running, drops are falling....

I became friends with Kwong Yem Han in 2007 and 2008. She was a student of Zhang Daqian when he lived in California. This a link to her website.
