Posted By: Emilio Bujalance Sun, Jun 06, 2021 IP: 95.62.26.135

Hi,

Can someone tell me something about this ukiyo-e of Tsukioka Kogyo from the series "Brocades of Capital" (Miyako no nishiki) of 1900-01, it is part of a series of twelve ukiyo-e, of which I found 4 in the book “The Beauty of Silence”, 4 more on the internet, but this one does not appear. Can someone tell me what the ukiyo-e image represents?
Thanks in advance,
Emilio Bujalance

The reading of main insciptions on the right gives a better ubderstanding about what is depicted on the print.

拳錦之圖 - Picture of Brocade of Fists
拳相撲の事 - The Fist Sumō

Fist Sumō (Fist Sumō Wrestling) was a popular entertainment in Edo. A game that mimics sumō. It has been handed down to present day in the form of "Rock-Stone-Scissors" game.(For further reading pls. ref. Google"Rock-Stone-Scissors" Under the awning there is a small sumō ring, a sumō referee with the umpire's fan also can be seen. The participants are divided to East and West groups.

With regards,
I.Nagy
