Posted By: Michael Thu, Jun 10, 2021 IP: 2600:6c40:4d7f:f1b1:

Hello -
Can anyone help identify or date this ink owl painting? The chop mark is very faded...
It is about 38" x 58"

An interesting object.
Your painting is very much destroyed. It has lost up to 70-80% percent of its surface to bugs, grasing layer after layer of it. A slow processing damage you rarely will find in paintings of the 18th century to that extend. We only can see the general outlook any longer.

Fortunately I had to attribute the seal once already and know it, it belongs to Soga Nichokuan.

Here is an example of the seal in the MFA: https://collections.mfa.org/objects/26029/hawk?ctx=8fe2b22b-1809-4047-be46-a45b3c295e44&idx=3

Here is an owl in the MET:

And here is especially interesting even a screen with that particular shape in the Met too:

It could be either Japanese, Chinese or Korean.
It could be about a 100- 150 years old.
The seal print is illegible

With regards,
