Subject:Writings on two japanese prints
Posted By: Tom Aspden Thu, Jan 27, 2022 IP: 31.205.31.52

Hi,
I recently purchased these two prints, along with 4 others by more well known artists, but I have been unable to find anything or anyone that would match the signatures or titles of these two!

Pics 1&2 of the same print, 3 is of a small print in two parts, but on one piece of paper.

Sorry if any of the photos are a bit unclear, I only have access to the ones given on ebay for the time being!

Thanks in advance for any help,
Tom

It appears to be a preliminary drawing (shita-e) for a woodblock diptych designed by the Osaka artist Nakai Yoshitaki (1841-1899) depicting the actors Nakamura Fukusuke III (1846-88) in the role of lion dancer Senseki Michinosuke (right panel) and on the left Nakamura Keijo (1836-75) as Kagahime and Arashi Gisaburō as Sugihara Kanbei.
The kabuki play is'Sengoku Tsumi Minato no Irifune', performed at the Shiba theatre in Osaka, 9th month 1874.

A rare find.

Guy.

Thanks very much, it's interesting that there isn't a signature on the first one!

I would be interested to know where you found the information on Kyokusō, so I can read a bit more on it?

Regards,
Tom

Dear Tom,
Regarding the 3rd print,
旭窓寫 - Drawn by Kyokusō
The source I found is only in Japanese;
大日本書畫家名家大鑑 傳記上編 1934 p. 743
The following brief summary can be found of him;
旭窓 (画)
加納信司, 明治七年大垣に生る。東京住、小島景信, 川端玉章の門
Kyokusō (Painter)
Kanō Shinji, Born in 1874 in Ōgaki, Residing in Tōkyō, Disciple of Kojima Keishin and Kawabata Gyokushō.
(His original name was Kanō Shinji, his year of birth was correctly 1874 , 1873 is wrong)

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thanks! I too found this image with the help of I. Nagy's translations above. I did wonder about whether it was a preparatory print of sorts, as I have seen other black and white prints with bits missing by yoshitaki on the Wased University's ukiyo-e database.

Regards,
Tom
