Subject:Chinese Wall Vase
Posted By: Peter Wed, Jun 15, 2022 IP: 91.141.35.105

Hello. I'd be grateful to hear your views on the age of this wall vase. I assume that it may be late 19th century, but am wondering if similar pieces were made into the Republic period.

Any comments will be gratefully received.

I believe your wall pocket probably dates to the first quarter of the 20th century, post Guangxu reign (1875-1908) most likely. The shape, colors and painting style (note those tiny hands compared to body size) have changed from the late 19th century, which is when I confidently believe the unmarked wall pocket shown below was made. It is 3.25" long by 6.5" high and is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. Detail and colors are excellent. I bought it 20 years ago on eBay for a bit over $50. I don't believe prices such as that have held firm.

best regards,

Bill H.

Here are a couple of views of another, larger wall vase that was once mine. It measured about 8 inches tall and about 3 inches at the widest. Probably dated to the mid-19th century, circa the early Xianfeng reign (1851-61), or before the Taiping rebels sacked Jingdezhen. Jingdezhen porcelains were usually not so clean as this one is on the exposed biscuit for about a generation.

Best regards,

Bill H.
