Subject:Last woodblock print request
Posted By: Chris Thu, Jun 16, 2022 IP: 2600:8801:fb00:a16:f

Hello All,

This is the last woodblock print I would like to catalog. I figured I would close the books on the woodblocks before moving on to ceramics and metalware.

This is one of my favorites for the subject matter alone - the 4th Battle of Kawankajima. It is the only martial-themed woodblock I have.

I am sure I am wrong, but would like to see how close I came to reading the date kanji correctly - was this printed in the 10th day of the 3rd month of the 22nd year of the Meiji era?

Anyway, I once again would like to humbly request the assistance of those here (e.g., I. Nagy, Stan et al) in identifying the artist, the publisher, and any other pertinent information, and once again thank you in advance for the same!

Kind Regards,
Chris

This ukiyo-e depicts the single duel between Uesugi Kenshin (middle) and Takeda Shingen (left) while Hara Ōsumi-no-Kami striking the horse of Shingen in attempt to poke the warrior in the fourh fight in the Battle of Kawanakajima (1561)
Serious historians say this duel never happened.

With regards,

The artist is Toyohara Chikanobu and the print is from The Tale of Heike - War Lords. Dated 1906.

From the series of heroes and heroines in "The Tale of Heike". The warlords and famous rivals, Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen are fighting each other.

If you go to artelino.com and set up an account, you can see many other prints from this series by searching in their archive under Chikanobu and "Tale of Heike".

Below is a copy of the print in JAODB. Ignore the information about it being a kabuki scene. That is wrong.

Cheers,
Stan
