Subject:Assistance requested with Hokusai Toto Shokei Ichiran print
Posted By: Chris Thu, Jun 16, 2022 IP: 2600:8801:fb00:a16:f

Hello Once Again,

This is the 2nd-to-last woodblock I would like to catalog before moving on to Japanese art in the round. As with the Kunisada, I have *some* knowledge of the print, i.e., I know it is from Vol. 2 of Hokusai's Toto Shokei Ichiran and the date it was published.

The subject is obviously kabuki theater, however my efforts to turn up any additional information on this specific print, and in particular, the poem inscribed on the print, have come up empty.

I once again thank (the collective) you in advance for any assistance you might be able to provide to help me better understand the subject as well as the inscription, both which would be warmly appreciated.

Kind Regards,
Chris

This is the Sakai-chō from Vol.2 of the book “Fine Views of the Eastern Capital“ (東都勝景一覧 下 「境町」)
The picture depicts a kabuki stage where the "Kaomise" of the year is taking place. In the upper part of the picture four current poems for the performance can be found by kyōka poets. Of the four poems, I can only read the two poems in the middle with complete certainity. Here they are;
Kōyōtei-maru Totō
Ichijō furite wa
The water will be warmer after each rain
It`s time for the bald catfish* to come out, too、 at the Kaomise*
(*Bald catfish - Namazu-bōzu - Clown of the shaved head that appears in Kabuki Jūhachiban "Shibaraku"
*Kaomise - 1st performance of kabuki once a year after the change of actors)

Ki Hakusetsu
Sakazuki dai no
Kaomise
Receive a big
cup
and drink it at once,
drunk Kaomise

(Alternative kanas are represented in their modern forms)

With regards,
I.Nagy

Dear I > Nagy,

Thank you so much for lending so much context to the scene and for the lengthy and much appreciated translation, both which help me better appreciate the work.

While I can't provide any translation, below is more information from the Harvard Art Museum for you. Plus, you can see some of the other pictures in the original book.

Here is some information from a sale of the original books. Note that there were a number of reprints.

Hi Stan,

Thank you for the reply and the link. The auction house from whom this print was acquired in the 1970s identified it as ca. 1800; the publisher is the same as listed in the example in your link.

I've actually found several digitally published copies from curated collections online, but am yet to find one that speaks to the poem(?) inscribed on the print.

Kind Regards,
Chris

Third poem,
Isseisha Kimaru
Kaomise wa
Inari-chō made
Kaomise is also a good occassion
for the Torii-school
artist picture painters
to get ahead in business
as far as Inari-chō

With regards,
I.Nagy
