Subject:17 century incense burner ( rare?)
Posted By: Damian Thu, Jun 16, 2022 IP: 89.205.135.158

Hello everyone
I did this message already 2 times but nothing showed on the board so doing it third time, sorry if I duplicate it, just don't know if it goes or not. 🙏

Oryginal message

some time ago I bought this beautiful Incense burner at an internet auction in the Netherlands, no data was given, even no picture of the sign. Actually no description. When I had it at home, I decided to ask the person who sold it to me about the history of this item. As I found out, this old lady does not know anything about it because she inherited it from her parents who had recently deceased and collected works of art. The rest of the items at the auction were 17th century English furniture and some 18th century Japanese items. For this I suppose the subject is seventeenth or eighteenth century. I searched the internet carefully and found only one auction with a similar item, I will put a photo for this auction too, maybe it will help. I think I found something special. I would be grateful if any of you could tell me something about this. Before I spend a lot on an expert appraisal. Thank you very much in advance and best regards.

This is not a xuandelu. The marking xuan is actually wrong. Maker of this has no traditional Chinese training. Our current writting system is different from the traditional system. It easy to find example online, it is about the details.

I want to say that is not easy to find on internet answers if you a real nob and you have zero knowledge, that why I like to ask people with real know how. For example how I can know if little changes to ancient writing are mistakes or just evolution or something else if I do not understand anything from it.
For example I was suggested by different seal I find on internet , different from this one you show me in picture. But I think is also wrong coz now I can see little difference to in it.
Btw
I love old Chinese items ( don't want say antiques) and they surrendered me in my house everywhere around.

This pictures show what inspired me to say this was xuande even if is not.
Greetings

I wish I could get my hands on ebay. I can find song items on ebay. But song or older are not allowed for selling from where I'm right now.

The apocryphal mark reads right-to-left in three squared-off but recognizable seal script forms of the applicable standard characters as "宣徳年" (Xuande nian), meaning "Xuande reign" (1426-1435). In Ming times, standard character marks would have contained a variant form of today's "德" (De), meaning "virtue", which has a horizontal line on the right side, betweeen its "eyes" and "heart" elements

Best regards,

Bill H.
